Anti-Poaching

Anti-Poaching

Our Strategy adopted is that of ‘Early Detection – rapid reaction “. Early detection is made easier by the fact that a very secure, electrified fence has to be crossed to traverse the Park, thus providing a start point and time indicator of all incursions.

Air Wing

The availability and use of both fixed wing and helicopters has become one of the most vital tools for the anti poaching teams. Aerial surveillance with fixed wing aircrafts are done daily to identify locality of assets that could be targets for poachers, as well as being able to get an indication of movement of animals according to existing conditions, there by assisting in targeting likely poaching areas of interest which is beneficial to short term and long term operations planning. The use of helicopters provides total flexibility of movement in all weathers and is the basis of the highly successful rapid reaction force.

Men On The Ground

Without “feet on the ground” the battle is lost. Rangers are deployed on a daily basis as well as on for extended patrols, overt and covert patrols, over a couple of days.

The men on the ground are able to move on foot, in vehicles, and with bicycles. In this way, the boundaries are constantly under surveillance, and incursions are rapidly picked up, and subsequent QRF actions generally lead to success.

Training

The “boots on the ground” are subject to selective training programs insuring the best possible candidates take on the responsibilities of protecting the areas and wildlife. As man power capacity increases, so does the need to train new rangers and teach existing rangers new modules. Training is done on site as well as with the Southern African Wildlife Collage.
